Das Café kurz vor der Eröffnung. Gemeinsam mit Mori Projects haben wir die Erweiterung einer bestehenden Bäckerei in Waiblingen entworfen. Die abgehängte Decke besteht aus Sperrholz und erinnert an eine riesigen Laubsägearbeit. Das Muster für die Abwicklung wurde von uns digital entwickelt und mit Lasertechnologie ausgeschnitten. Die Decke wurde hinterleuchtet und erzeugt zusammen mit dem fein abgestimmten Farb- und Materialkonzept eine ungewöhnlich elegante Stimmung. Stühle von Moroso, Stoffe von Paul Smith und Kettenvorhänge aus rosé-eloxiertem Aluminium runden das Ganze ab.

Gestaltung der Corporate Identity des Cafés. Logo, diverse Buttons. Die von uns entworfene “Laubsägearbeit” der Lichtdecke wurde als Gestaltungsvorlage für Printmedien verwendet.
Lynches River Park: Southern Forest

In the spring of 2005 the Lynches River Park Steering Committee (Committee), formed with representation from Florence County, SC Natural Resources and interested citizens, engaged ZINC Projects (ZINC) to propose plans and alternatives for the development of enhanced visitor experiences at the Lynches River Park (Park). In June 2005 several plans and concepts were presented including an interpretive facility, a canopy walkway and a naturalized “Southern Forest” (Naturalization).
The resulting Visitor Experience Master Plan stresses that the development of the Park is a “grow as you go” process: The park will mimic nature in its development. Like the growth rings of a tree, the pattern of development will vary over a series of years. Some years much will be accomplished and other years will serve as opportunities to reflect, plan and determine the next phase of growth. The Naturalization was to consist of enhanced planted areas where visitors could experience the natural wild flora of the Pee Dee region. It was to be a place consistent with the Committee’s direction to stimulate a responsible, caring attitude towards the natural assets of the region. The Naturalization would be located in those spots where the soil and water regimes would support particular varieties of plant material. Naturalization was to be done at minimum cost and with broad involvement of the public.
The Committee approved the above proposals and ZINC coordinated discussions to ensure that the proposed structures, walkways and Naturalization were mutually supportive and consistent.
In November of 2005 the authors, as part of the ZINC team, lived on the site and met with helpful individuals and groups to formulate this Plan. This Plan was edited and modified using input from Committee members and experts in March 2007.
Haag Farbkonzept
Das 1:1 Farbkonzept auf Gipskarton sowie Muster für die “Laubsägearbeit” an der Decke des Cafés.
Der Deckenspiegel wurde wie eine durchgehendes “Bild” entworfen, ohne Rapport, nachträglich in produktionsfähige Segmente geteilt. Zur Produktion wurde ein computergesteuerter CNC-Fräse eingesetzt, die die Schichtholzplatten aus Buche nach der vorgegebenen Vektorzeichnung perforierte.
Queen’s University Autism Mobile Research Lab
We were asked together with ZINC Projects to provide vehicle options and a corporate identity for the mobile laboratories including recommended and specific supplier modifications, price quotations and approximate delivery dates for each vehicle. We developed a plan for the interior design and customization and equipment layout.
Aesthetics
Term defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as the philosophy or theory of taste, or of the perception of the beautiful in nature and art’. It was first used about the middle of the 18th cent. by the German philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-62), who applied it to the theory of the liberal arts or the science of perceptible beauty. The scope and usefulness of the term have been much discussed, and in Gwilt’s Encyclopaedia of Architecture (1842), it was still described as a silly pedantic term’ and one of the useless additions to nomenclature in the arts’ which had been introduced by the Germans. In the 20th cent. there is no general agreement about the scope of philosophical aesthetics, but it is understood to be wider than the theory of fine art and to include the theory of natural beauty and non-perceptible (e.g. moral or intellectual) beauty in so far as these are thought to be susceptible of philosophical or scientific study.

Aesthetics attempts to give an account of the human reaction to beauty and art, to define the words, to explain how men perceive the ‘beautiful’ or the ‘artistic’, to decide whether the concepts have any other than a subjective meaning and to explain what happens when a man stands before a ‘beautiful’ sight or a work of ‘art’ – what kind of experiences he has and in what way he is able to ‘experience’ anything. Although the writings of Plato and Aristotle contain observations on the subject matter of aesthetics, the word was first used by the 18th-century German philosopher A. G. Baumgarten. Some of the most prominent theoreticians in aesthetics since the 19th century include Winckelmann, I. Kant, Lessing, J. Schiller, G. Hegel, J. G. Herder, F. Schelling, Ruskin, Baudelaire, Taine, F. Nietzsche, Croce, Worringer and Gombrich.
Baumgarten, Alexander Gottlieb (1714 – 1762), German philosopher, a follower of Christian Wolff (1679-1754) and Leibniz. In 1740, he became professor of philosophy at Frankfurt-am-Oder. He invented the term aesthetics and his Aesthetica (1750) is a pioneering work on that subject.

Für den Projektentwickler Dipl.-Museologe Uwe Böttcher arbeiten wir zur Zeit an der Vorkonzeption eines internationalen Ausstellungszentrums für die Stiftung Internationales Fussball Museum (c). Ein temporäres High-Tech Bauwerk mit textiler Fassade (1. Standort Süd-Afrika), soll die Inhalte, die zur Zeit entwickelt werden, aufnehmen.
Die Stiftung Internationales Fussball Museum i.Gr., mit ihrem zukünftigen Hauptsitz in Lichtenstein, sowie Repräsentanzen in den Niederlanden, der Schweiz und den USA, wird die Entwicklung und inhaltliche Betreuung der Ausstellungsinhalte übernehmen.”
Lynches River Park Project completes funding effort
(FLORENCE, SC) Florence County is a step closer to getting its Environmental Discovery Center and Tree Top Canopy Walk built at Lynches River County Park.
U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint presented a $95,000 check from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the county Wednesday for the project. In presenting the check, DeMint said the project is more than an education and recreation effort. “This project demonstrates world class creativity. Some folks could look at this project and ask “What does this have to do with economic development,” DeMint said. “But I know from my years in marketing that sometimes it’s a little thing that sets an area apart, and I think this is going to be one of them.”
Plans developed by ZINC Projects include the Environmental Discovery Center and the Tree Top Canopy Walk. The center also will feature a various educational designed to encourage people to become “Naturalists” as a means to stimulate lifelong learning.
“The Environmental Discovery Center Committee has envisioned a center that will provide a learning experience that will be ever changing and will leave the visitors with a desire to return,” said Sterling Sadler, Chairperson of the Interpretive Center Committee.
The project is designed to bring visitors to the tree tops of the 676-acre park.
Eschke Fabrics, Präsentationsmodul
Eschke Fabrics, eine der führenden Seidenmanufakturen Deutschlands, die sich auf die Rekonstruktion von historischen Wandtapisserien aus edelsten Materialien spezialisiert hat, erteilte uns einen ungewöhnlichen Auftrag.
Zur Präsentation und Ausstellung ihrer opulenten Kollektionen sollten wir eine Präsentationsfläche entwerfen. Vorgabe: 9 qm, modular, kurze Auf- und Abbauzeit. Wir verzichteten auf die naheliegende “Standard-Messestand-Struktur” und entwarfen stattdessen ein vergleichsweise einfaches System, das aus beinahe nichts als der Stoffkollektion selbst besteht.
Auf einer mit Stahlseilen verspannten Aluminiumschiene (Rosso, Stuttgart) bewegen sich zahlreiche Schlitten die 60 cm breite Stoffbahnen wie Fahnen präsentieren – sichtbar ist eigentlich nur die Ware, die auf dem Schienensystem beliebig dicht oder locker gehängt, verschoben werden kann. Die Kreisfläche kann an jeder Stelle für Kunden zugänglich gemacht werden und bildet dann eine Koje für Besprechungen oder um vertiefende Informationen auf 20″ LCD Monitoren zu betrachten. Die Stoffe sind gleichermassen von Innen wie von Aussen zu betrachten.

Advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of the future generations! ScienceSouth’s vision is to engage 125,000 individuals per year through the creation of innovative, enjoyable, learning experiences. It will achieve this by providing young people with scientific adventures, technology endeavors and first hand experiences. Active learning, invention, and problem solving based programs will also be delivered to children and their key influencers – teachers and extended family.
By an iconic facility, ScienceSouth will convey the significance of community based learning to the region and state. The architecture will reflect the environment by using the geometry found in nature including, the Fibonacci spiral, the structure of spider webs, the hexagonal honeycomb and the tree with its branching structure.
The structures will radically change visitor perspectives. The architecture will capitalize on existing site features to achieve rich and diverse visitor experiences. Connections to the environment and nature are vital and require the opportunity to make real time observations inside and outside the buildings.
The design will pursue the use of alternative energy and efficient uses of energy. It will achieve a green architecture designation and “tread lightly” on the site, leaving no indelible impact. It will demonstrate best practice in the construction systems and use of materials.
The structure will have three innovative physical spaces: the Pivot, the Span and the Spire.
Science on Wheels 2nd Mobile Learning Lab on the road
ZINC Projects designed and constructed two mobile laboratories to deliver science and technology programs to students and teachers of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. We consulted on Graphics and Interior Design. Science on Wheels is equipped with a science laboratory, a portable planetarium, and equipment to teach physical, environmental, and biological sciences. The laboratory accommodates up to twenty students and the planetarium holds thirty students.

“Songs are a great way to teach people about science. The NOW HEAR THIS science show incorporates the elements of science song and musical experiments. This one-hour performance engages young audiences with physical science standards; motion and sound, and properties of matter. Using a variety of instruments and demonstrations, key science concepts, such as vibration, pressure, and properties of waves are explored by the audience.

Das grobe Konzept steht! Nach vielen Diskussionen mit dem Board und den inhaltlich verantwortlichen Gruppen der beteiligten Universitäten kamen wir zu einem Konzept, das mehrere physikalische “Ebenen” verbindet. Das Projekt wird sich ab sofort mit Attraktionen und Erlebnissen sowohl auf, als auch unter Wasser – sowohl auf, als auch über der Erde weiterentwickeln.
Die ersten Skizzen führten zu der Metapher des Bienenstocks, mit seiner modularen Struktur, die beliebig anwachsen oder auch schrumpfen kann. Ähnlich wie in der Natur wollen wir das Projekt auf einer riesigen Fläche mit meherere “Initial”-Keimzellen starten und dann gemäss unserer ersten “Grow -as-you-go” Richtlinie behutsam entwickeln.
Erste Schritte – Konzeption
Gemeinsam mit ZINC Projects entwickeln wir derzeit ein Visitor Center für Lynches River Park in Effingham, South Carolina USA. Inmitten beeindruckender Natur mit Sumpfgebieten und umgeben von Plantagen die sehr an den Film “Vom Winde verweht” erinnern, entsteht ein Naturerlebnis der besonderen Art.
Unser Auftrag umfasst die Entwicklung eines Besucherrundganges durch die Gipfel der Bäume sowie ein das Konzept für ein “Environmental Discovery Center” mit Schausammlungen und Exponaten. Des weiteren werden wir uns um das Corporate Design des Parks und ein Kommunikationskonzept kümmern. Das Projekt wird über mehrere Jahre bis Ende 2009 entwickelt und in modularen Teilschritten permanent erweitert.

1. eine “intime Ebene” auf der eine kurze Story “handschriftlich”erzählt wird.
2. eine “sachliche Ebene” mit den Daten zur betreffenden Flora oder Fauna.
Exhibit Cartoons
Hallo. Wir sind David und Claire. Anstelle vieler Worte und Erklärungen visualisieren wir die Aktionen und Handlungen, die Besucher an den Exponaten eines Science Centers ausführen sollen. Dadurch erübrigt sich die Beschreibung in mehreren Sprachen. (Set von 50 Zeichnungen für das Glasgow Science Center)
Eye-Co
Für eine mobile Behandlungs- und Trainingseinheit zur Therapie eines bestimmten Augenleidens haben wir das Design entwickelt. EyeCo sphere wird an einem beweglichen Krag-Arm an Wand oder Decke des Behandlungsraumes montiert. Der Patient liegt auf einer Ruheliege. Nach der Nutzung schwenkt EyeCo zur Seite oder nach oben – der Raum steht für andere Zwecke zur Verfügung.
Ein Gel-pad stabilisiert und fixiert den Kopf in einer entspannten Haltung auf einer „Standard-Liegefläche“. Eine starre Verbindung zwischen Kopf und EyeCo wird vermieden. Die mit einer starren Verbindung zusammenhängenden Bildwackler entfallen. Insgesamt wirkt der Umgang mit dem Gerät dadurch weniger bedrohlich.

The money given to ScienceSouth will be used to expand the use of ScienceSouth on Wheels, said Colleen Zilio, executive director of ScienceSouth. “This will allow us to double our services to area schools,” Zilio said. Last year the organization delivered hands-on science programs to 13,000 children, teachers and families in the Pee Dee, Zilio said.

Menschen haben das Bedürfnis nach realen Erfahrungen im dreidimensionalen Raum. Menschen wollen sich nicht ausschließlich mit virtuellen Erlebnissen beschäftigen. Die Faszination der Begegnung mit begreifbaren Objekten gewinnt in dem Maße an Bedeutung, wie virtuelle Welten in den Alltag einziehen. Es gilt, diesen Trend für die Entwicklung einer Ausstellung zu nutzen. Die Ausstellung ist populär und allgemein verständlich konzipiert und führt in das Themenfeld Energie spielerisch und erlebnisbetont ein.
