Why Corporate Identity?

Some thoughts about how to take a stand.

Just like individuals, every organisation, company or brand has its own identity. A distinct identity differentiates an organisation from its competitors. It allows customers, suppliers and staff to recognise, understand and clearly describe the organisation concerned. The identity of any organisation is complex. It includes the effectiveness of its services or products, the shared values and ambitions of its employees, the corporate tone of voice and PR profile. Naturally, its visual appearance (or visual identity) plays the key role.

Visual identity manifests itself in many ways. In addition to its logo, typeface and colours, the following all contribute to the impression created by the identity: stationery, marketing literature, buildings, interior design, signage, product design, customer information, vehicles and every aspect of promotional activity from a high-profile advertising campaign to the design of a giveaway.

The detailed management of a visual identity is equally important as the management of other business assets such as finance or human resources. Without a well thought out visual identity guideline, an organisation’s brand perception will be at best diluted, and at worse appear chaotic and unprofessional.

When all of the visual elements of an organisation work together in unity, the investment in its identity is protected and the overall image becomes one of quality and strength.

Science Village, Timmins – Interior Design Development, 1st step: Definition of general approach

Currently we are working on the design development of a Science Center in a heritage building downtown Timmins, Canada. The challenge: Create a variety of useable spaces for programs that create visual interest and pique curiosity. Recommend a layout which facilitates ease of operation and building functionality.

The proposal is based on the use of a track system to create up to five distinct activity zones for main floor of facility. Using a ceiling mounted track system – partitions can be freely moved and rearranged to create distinct zones.

Advantages: • Curtains can be configured to create zones in different locations and zones of different sizes. Two track system allows overlay of different materials • Temperature control of main entrance can be achieved. • Creates visual interest and makes the space feel larger by making parts of the facility visible and hiding other areas • Can be used as signage system to label workshops and activities • Provides acoustic and visual barriers enabling several programs to be running at one time. • The partitions can be composed of a variety of materials and can be sued for a number of purposes.

Ecsite Budapest

ecsite-budapest-booth.jpgTogether with our partners from ZINC Projects we joined the Ecsite Conference in Budapest (28.05.08-01.06.08) where we launched our idea of the “the $ 2.5 million Science Center”. Our members Colleen Zilio, Sudbury Canada and Rebecca Crawford, Southampton UK gave presentations in a panel session with the provocative title “Science without Centers”.It is our belief that innovative education projects do not require huge infrastructure. As a result of the panel presentation and exhibition stand, many interested people met with us at the booth and we were pleased to show and discuss three of our current “low budget but high impact” projects.ZINC Projects develops and implements effective projects for smaller centers or capital budgets such as: Mobile science lab based outreach programs, alternative and small science learning centers, Science Festivals. As a team of socially conscious entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, artists and inventors we focus on delivering effective and economically sustainable projects. By merging social goals with effective business practices we achieve successful, sustainable projects. See www.zincprojects.comOur mission: Facing the challenges of small markets, limited capital resources, geographically or economically isolated populations. Explore alternative approaches to execute science and technology education. Find out how to create high impact science education initiatives with limited capital outlay.

Corporate Design

“ScienceSouth’s workshops are wonderful for families to spend quality time together,” Chairman Cary Ashworth said. “Families who visit the learning pavilion will participate in one or two hour hands-on workshops. We are taking programs that have been so popular with children at schools and adapting them so that children and adults can learn together. New programs will be introduced every six weeks, so families can return again and again to take part in a variety of workshops.”

ZINC Projects Logo Redesign

zinc-projects-logo-new.jpg

ZINC Projects team members are creative and one-of-a-kind, and the logo on their business cards should reflect their individuality. We strongly believe in the strength of a strict corporate identity, but how can this approach also provide an opportunity to reveal the individual? This presented a significant challenge in redesigning the logo.

Our solution was to develop a guideline that allowed each team member to create their own versions using colour and matching background pictures.”

Lynches River County Park Environmental Discovery Center is nestled along the cypress and water tupelo along the scenic Lynches River. It features a canopy walk suspended over the wetlands approaching the river. The 250-squared-meter (2700-sq.-ft.) EDC houses a Nature Lab, Veranda Observatory and Briefing Room. Each is equipped with tools and equipment to facilitate citizen science: the ongoing monitoring of the park ecosystems and environment. EDC Coordinator Teresa Simons commented that “visitors will observe, measure and experience nature for themselves.” The center’s Briefing Room has real time environmental monitoring of soil, air, and water and weather conditions.

The 328-ft. canopy walk is a combination of ground-supported walkway, tree-supported observation platforms and cable-supported bridges, starting from the platform of EDC Veranda Observatory.

Lake City native, national business leader and philanthropist Darla Moore said: “Today, we celebrate the opening of this incredible environmental discovery center right in the middle of our own rural Pee Dee region.” Moore congratulated the EDC Steering Committee for the realization of their vision and commented on the importance of public and private partnerships to enact economic change in the region. She also complimented the architecture and design of the center which re-used siding and flooring from a soon to be destroyed century old tobacco barn.
